As many of you are aware, Hong Kong has seen frequent demonstrations in the past three months – many of which have made global headlines. We understand that the current situation may have caused concerns about traveling to Hong Kong in the near future, and we hope to address those concerns in this newsletter.
Most of the protests in Hong Kong have been non-violent, but of course that does not make good headline material, so the media portrayal focuses on the most sensational images & events. Protests are largely extremely civil; by some measures the largest have included up to 2 million people – over 20% of the city’s population! Marchers have included people from all walks of life – including students and young children. When there are clashes with the police, these tend to involve minority elements late at night. All of these clashes are planned in advance in known areas.
